30 Day Song Challenge: Day 1

OK, it’s the first day of the 30 Day Song Challenge. Today’s prompt is “A song you like with a color in the title.” What would your choice be? Here’s mine, though I’m sure it’s not much of a surprise if you know me.

“Black” by Pearl Jam

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Pearl Jam has been my favorite band since 1991. I can guarantee you’ll see them pop up again and again throughout this challenge. I can’t help it. To me it’s an obvious choice, though there are plenty of other contenders. I would say Prince’s “Purple Rain” is a close second, but that one may pop up later. I’m not sure yet and I’m trying to not repeat songs.

I just love this song, though. I remember when I bought my first CASSETTE of “Ten.” I came home from the mall and turned it on in my room. When “Black” came on, I went into a sort of trance as the music just enveloped me. I stayed in it even through “Jeremy” and only “came to” when that side of the tape stopped.

And if you do not understand what I mean, then you’re too young to talk to me! LOL

That song just stayed magical for me. And then I remember when Eddie started to slowly perform it at shows. We were at one of the first where he resurrected it and it was magical in a different way live. I still get completely lost in the song whenever I hear it, especially live. I’m including a couple of recordings of it for you to enjoy.

“Black” live from Wrigley Field 8/20/2022

This is a video from the last Pearl Jam tour that I saw. I had tickets to Seattle’s Home Shows in 2018, but my mom died the day of the first show. I can’t believe it’s been six years since I’ve seen them live – longest drought of my life since I started seeing them in the late 1990s. But such is life and COVID.

You may not be able to view this directly on my blog in the embedding, but you can click to watch it on YouTube.
